Colorado Red Rocks

A Bucket List Concert Experience

If you love live music, there are certain venues that people talk about with almost mythical status. One of those places is Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre - Official Website.

Seasoned concertgoers will tell you the same thing: you have to see a show there at least once in your life.

After finally experiencing it ourselves, I can confirm — it absolutely lives up to the hype.

And getting to see one of our favorite bands, Mt. Joy, headline there made it even more special.

A Full-Circle Moment From Mexico

Our love for Mt. Joy actually started a few years earlier in Mexico.

Early in our relationship — only six dates in — we took a leap and booked a trip to Mexico together to see Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds perform in Riviera Maya.

That trip ended up being one of those magical travel moments where everything just clicks — beautiful beaches, amazing people, and the kind of energy that only happens at a Dave show. During one of the nights, a band we had never heard before opened the show.

That band was Mt. Joy.

One night an opening band took the stage that we had never heard before.

The lead singer, Matt Quinn, walked out wearing a Philadelphia Eagles shirt and immediately caught our attention. Their sound had this incredible mix of indie rock storytelling and jam-band energy, with hints of Grateful Dead influence woven in.

Within a few songs, we were hooked.

We had no idea then that a few years later we’d be flying to Colorado to see them headline one of the most iconic venues in the world.

Red Rocks: A Venue Like No Other

Just outside Denver in Morrison, Colorado, Red Rocks is unlike any other venue. Massive red sandstone formations tower on both sides of the stage, creating natural acoustics that make the music feel bigger and more immersive.

As the sun sets behind the mountains and the lights come up on stage, the entire amphitheater feels electric.

You don’t just go to a concert here — you experience it.

Where We Stayed

For our trip, we stayed at Historic Denver Union Station Hotel | The Crawford Hotel, which is located inside the beautifully restored Denver Union Station.

Union Station is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops, making it the perfect home base for exploring Denver before heading to the show.

Red Rocks is about 30 minutes from downtown Denver, so staying in the city worked out perfectly.

Getting to Red Rocks (Pro Tip)

Driving to Red Rocks can be a bit of an adventure.

The road up to the venue winds through the mountains and parking can fill up quickly. In many cases, parking isn’t guaranteed unless you arrive very early.

Instead of dealing with the stress of driving, we decided to book a shuttle through
Red Rocks Shuttle. We used Shuttles to Red Rocks

Pickup was right across the street from our hotel at a bar called

We grabbed drinks and food before the show and then hopped on the bus.

The shuttle ended up being one of the most fun parts of the night.

There was a bathroom on board, we could bring our drinks, and best of all, neither of us had to worry about being the designated driver.

Everyone on the bus was heading to the same concert, so within minutes we were chatting with other Mt. Joy fans and making new friends. It felt like the concert had already started.

When the Music Starts

When Mt. Joy finally took the stage, the entire amphitheater came alive.

Hearing their songs echo through the canyon walls while thousands of fans sang along was unforgettable.

It felt like a full-circle moment — from discovering them on a beach in Mexico to seeing them headline Red Rocks.

Visit Red Rocks During the Day

Even if you’re attending a concert, I highly recommend visiting Red Rocks during the day.

Walking through the amphitheater in the daylight gives you a chance to really appreciate the scale of the rock formations and the incredible views of the surrounding mountains.

Inside the venue you’ll also find the Red Rocks Hall of Fame & Visitor Center, which showcases the legendary artists who have performed there over the years.

Another uniquely Red Rocks experience is Yoga on the Rocks where hundreds of people gather in the amphitheater for a morning yoga session surrounded by towering red rock formations and Colorado blue skies.

It’s one of those moments that makes you realize this place is more than just a concert venue — it’s a destination.

Traveling With Intent

One thing we know for sure: we’ll probably never see the Dave Matthews Band play at Red Rocks again. Their stage setup has become so large over the years that navigating the narrow mountain roads to the venue just isn’t practical anymore. And their fan base is simply too big for a venue of this size.

What I wouldn’t give to go back in time and see them play there in the early days.

But that realization is part of what made this trip so special.

We knew Mt. Joy was on the rise. We discovered them early, and we wanted to see them at Red Rocks before it was too late — before they outgrew venues like this or before the moment passed.

This trip wasn’t just about a concert.

It was about traveling with intent — chasing a moment you know you may never get again.

That’s the kind of experience that stays with you forever. 🎶
